Learning about Gender Equality in Iceland

Teachers' Training Event in Borgarholtsskóli, Iceland

      From the 20th to the 26th of March, the Erasmus+ project CreActive! held a special Teacher’s Training Event in Borgarhotlsskóli, Reikyavik. The school is well known for being a runner up on Gender Equality, which is a core subject in their curriculum. Delegations from Croatia, Hungary, Italy and Spain visited the school to learn and share how the different schools’ work the SDG5: Gender Equality.   We missed our colleagues from the German delegation that couldn’t attend due to COVID-19 restrictions.    
        Del 20 al 26 de marzo, el proyecto CreActive! del programa ERASMUS+ celebró un Evento de Formación para el Profesorado especial en Borgarholtsskóli, Reikyavik.  Este centro es conocido internacionalmente por su experiencia en Igualdad de Género, que es una asignatura troncal en su curriculum. Las delegaciones de Croacia, Hungría, Italia y España lo visitaron para aprender y compartir cómo se trabaja el ODS5: Igualdad de Género en las diferentes instituciones. Lamentablemente, nuestro centro socio en Alemania no pudo asistir a estas jornadas debido a restricciones de la COVID-19.



        The Spanish delegation was integrated by our Erasmus+ Coordinator Sandra Reyes, our school counsellor Rosa María Gómez del Pino, Miriam Jerónimo, Latin teacher and head of the Latin department and Ofelia Aguilar, English teacher and part of the Erasmus+ coordination team. 

   La delegación española estaba integrada por nuestra coordinadora Erasmus+ Sandra Reyes, nuestra orientadora Rosa María Gómez del Pino, la profesora Miriam Jerónimo, Jefa del departamento de Latín y Ofelia Aguilar, profesora de Inglés y parte de la coordinación Erasmus+. 



        During our first day of mobility, we were welcomed by Borgarholtsskóli principal Ásta Laufey Aðalsteinsdóttir. Then, the teacher Gu₫ny María helped us to get to know each other with a nice icebreaking activity. Afterwards we participated in two lectures and the teachers showed us around the school. The first one was given by UN Women Iceland. They explained to us how this organisation works and the great job they are doing worldwide.
        Durante nuestro primer día de movilidad, fuimos recibidos por la directora del centro islandés Ásta Laufey Aðalsteinsdóttir, tras lo cual la profesora Gu₫ny María condujo una actividad para romper el hielo que nos permitió conocernos mejor. Posteriormente participamos en dos charlas y nos mostraron las instalaciones del centro. La primera de las charlas fue desarrollada por UN Woman Iceland, quienes nos explicaron cómo funciona esta organización y la gran labor que realizan alrededor del mundo.



        Afterwards we were showed around the school and its magnificient facilities.
        Tras esto, se nos mostró el centro escolar y sus magníficas instalaciones.



    The second lecture, by Unnur Gísladóttir, “How to begin teaching Gender studies” dealt with the methodology and program carried in the subject Gender Equality at their school.
    
    La segunda charla, impartida por Unnur Gísladóttir, “¿Cómo empezar a enseñar estudios de género?” trataba la metodología y el programa impartido en la asignatura de Igualdad de Género en su escuela.


        
    

    Our day ended by visiting Nordic Wasabi, a company that exports wasabi from Iceland to all Europe and the USA.  This company has developed a low impact and sustainable way to grow this temperamental plant using the heat from the natural gasses of their land.

    Nuestro día finalizó con una visita a Nordic Wasabi, una empresa que exporta wasabi desde Islandia a toda Europa y Estados Unidos. Esta empresa ha desarrollado un cultivo de bajo impacto medioambiental que aprovecha el calor del gas natural para cultivar esta planta tan temperamental.


        On Tuesday, 21
st of March, we started with presentations of Iceland, Spain and Croatia on how we worked the sustainable development goal 5: Gender Equality at our schools.

        El martes 21 de marzo, las delegaciones de Islandia, España y Croacia empezamos compartiendo por medio de presentaciones cómo trabajamos el ODS 5: Igualdad de Género en nuestros centros.

Croatian presentation

        Then, we participated in a workshop related to Unnur’s lecture. / Después participamos en un taller relacionado con la charla impartida por Unnur, tras la cual, nos dividimos en dos grupos.



        Afterwards the delegations were divided in two: coordinators held a meeting were the Short Term Mobilities from Spain and Hungary were discussed while the other teachers carried a job-shadowing in the school. They could see a class about Graphic Design in action and our school counsellor Rosa met her homonymous in Borgarholtsskóli. They shared experiences and talk about the differences and similarities between school systems regarding orientation and counselling.

        Los coordinadores asistimos a una reunión para organizar las próximas movilidades con alumnado en España y Hungría, mientras nuestros compañeros asistían a una actividad de observación de buenas prácticas en una clase de diseño gráfico. Nuestra orientadora tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a su homóloga islandesa y compartir experiencias sobre la organización y desempeño de su departamento en los diferentes sistemas educativos.





        Finally, we ended our day with a lecture by Hanna Björg Vilhjálmsdóttir. She taught among many other things how this subject started and the importance of it in their school as well as showing us some examples of materials they have designed for the course.

       Finalmente, terminamos la jornada con una charla impartida por Hanna Björg Vilhjálmsdóttir sobre cómo se originó la asignatura de igualdad de género en el centro, su importancia y algunos materiales que han diseñado para este curso.

        
    On Wednesday, 22nd of March, we held our second CreActive! coordinators meeting in which we went over the eTwinning platform as well as different organisation details. The rest of the teachers joined a new job-shadowing this time our teachers assisted to an English class.

    El miércoles 22 de marzo, se desarrolló la segunda reunión de coordinadores CreActive! en la que se trataron temas como la plataforma eTwinning y diferentes aspectos de la organización del proyecto. Mientras tanto, el resto de profesorado continúo con la observación de buenas prácticas en una clase de inglés como lengua extranjera.

    During the afternoon, the company Gagarin held a workshop about a program called ASTRID. The company is mainly known for installation of technological stands in Museums. Their commitment to protect the environment led them to design a game based on SDGs 13 Climate Action in which Icelandic scientists and schools are collaborating.

    Por la tarde, la empresa Gagarin desarrolló un taller sobre su programa ASTRID. La empresa se dedica principalmente a la instalación de stands interactivos en museos, pero su compromiso por el medio ambiente, especialmente en todo lo relacionado con el ODS 13: Acción por el clima, les llevó a desarrollar este juego en el que colaboran científicos y escuelas de Islandia.

        We ended our day with a visit to Fly over Iceland, which allowed us to visit many remote areas of the country without leaving Reikyavik.

        Terminamos nuestro día con la visita a Fly over Iceland, lo que nos permitió visitar las áreas más remotas del país sin salir de Reikyavik.

        There was time for leisure and sightseeing on Thursday 23rd of March, when the Icelandic delegation took us to many places in the Reikyavik Peninsula. We were really lucky to have such a nice weather and visit some wonderful and magical places.

      También tuvimos tiempo libre para el esparcimiento el jueves 23 de marzo, cuando el equipo islandés nos llevó en una ruta por la península de Reikyavik. Fuimos muy afortunados de visitar lugares mágicos e impresionantes, disfrutando a la vez de un tiempo agradable.


    
    On our final day, our delegations visited the University Campus, starting with the Women’s History Archive in the Iceland National Library. Rakel Adolphdóttir explained us how the archive started, its importance and the different types of the documents they store: from love letters and diaries to official documents written by women associations and movements. The importance of this archive can only be grasped by a phrase Rakel shared with us: “If we believe history was only about men, what kind of future do we imagine?” 

    En nuestro último día, visitamos el Campus Universitario, empezando por el Archivo Histórico de la Mujer en la Biblioteca Nacional de Islandia. Rakel Adolphdóttir, encargada del archivo, nos explicó como empezó, su importancia y los diferentes tipos de documentos que alberga: desde cartas de amor y diarios hasta documentos oficiales de asociaciones y movimientos feministas. La importancia de este archivo puede ser apreciada con una frase cuya traducción es: "Si creemos que nuestra historia solo trata de hombres, ¿qué tipo de futuro imaginamos?"



        After this visit, we were received in Veröld, house of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the first woman president in the world and the International Centre of Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding. The building was designed to evoke the importance of languages and their common roots. The centre is decorated with different art pieces from Icelandic artists and has an auditorium prepared for international conventions. We ended our visit in a permanent exposition designed for schools that teaches about the different languages in the world and how they are connected in their roots.

        Después de esta visita, nos recibieron en Veröld, casa de Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, la primera presidenta de un país en el mundo y Centro Internacional de Multilingüísmo y Entendimiento Intercultural. El centro está decorado con obras de arte por varios artistas islandeses y tiene un auditorio preparado para convenciones internacionales. Terminamos esta visita en una exposición permanente preparada para los colegios e institutos que trata sobre las diferentes lenguas del mundo y cómo están conectadas en sus orígenes.



        We ended our day visiting the National Museum of Iceland where the guides took us to a trip to the past explaining us how Iceland came to be the nation it is today. We were also able to check the rainbow circuit which explains different pieces from the collection with an LGTBQIA+ perspective. 

        Terminamos este día en el Museo Nacional de Islandia donde los guías nos trasladaron al pasado explicando cómo Islandia llegó a ser la nación que es hoy. También pudimos seguir el circuito del arcoíris que explica diferentes piezas de la colección con una perspectiva LGTBIQA+.


        We finally said goodbye to our international colleagues in our farewell dinner. We leave Iceland having made new friends with our backpack full of new ideas and experiences that we are eager to share in our school. Thank you Icelandic team for organising such a wonderful experience!

        Decimos adiós a nuestros compañeros de las otras delegaciones en una cena de despedida. Nos vamos de Islandia con nuevos amigos y una mochila cargada de ideas y experiencias nuevas que deseamos compartir con nuestro centro. ¡Muchísimas gracias al equipo de Borgarholtsskóli por organizar una experiencia maravillosa!
